General Bubna
has suffered the consequences of trying to hold Obernzell against odds of two
to one with a major river at his back.
As soon as
General Lichtenstein realised that he was being attacked by two Bavarian
divisions he ordered Bubna to abandon the town and retreat to the east bank of
the river Danube.
The Bavarian
cavalry advanced to pin 1st division, but the Austrian hussars won
the initial melee and this allowed them to retire in good order.
However when
they reached the river they had to deploy to hold the bridge. This allowed the Bavarians to advance into
artillery range.
For a short
time it appeared that 1st division would be able to hold until night
fall. But as evening approached the Bavarians
pressed home their attack and the defence fell apart.
Two Austrian
infantry brigades were forced to surrender.
A third routed from the field and a fourth retreated shaken. The cavalry brigade routed from the field. The gunners joined the rout and abandoned
their guns. Only one infantry brigade
retained their morale and held the bridge to cover the retreat.
General Wrede
has won a major victory without losing a single man.
