September 1813
11th
Bavarian division held the town of Altheim, and was the forward division of 8th
French corps. They were tasked to take
and hold a crossing of the river Inn.
They sent their hussar brigade to cross and recce the road bridge to
Raab. Unwilling to risk a major
engagement they were on Move orders. As
such they would observe, but not engage, the enemy.
As they
crossed the bridge they observed a the Austrian division in and around Raab
forming column of attack just west of the town. When they were formed the Austrians advanced
towards the river.
The Bavarian
cavalry immediately turned about and returned to Altheim. Before they did so they had plenty of time
to observe the strength and composition of the enemy division, which was duly
reported to General Vandamme the commander of 8th French corps.
