1200 9th
September 1813
General Wrede
lost no time in the pursuit of 1st Austrian division.
7th
Bavarian corps crossed the river Danube at first light and advanced towards
Rohrbach, pushing the disorganised Austrian brigades ahead of them
The mass of
fugitives prevented 2nd Austrian division from moving forward to
engage the Bavarian’s as they crossed the river. This would have been their best option, but
the routed mass forced them to hold their position at Rohrbach.
General Lichtenstein
was tempted to order his battered corps to retreat to Freistadt. But to do so would abandon 2nd
Austrian corps at Withering to a flank attack from the north.
It would also
open him to disciplinary action as he had firm orders to hold Rohrbach and
secure the Austrian right flank
In addition
he was well aware that there was no better defensive position at Freistadt than
his present one amongst the hills around Rohrbach.
So it looked
like he was damned whatever he did.
